How to prepare for your job interview in 10 easy steps

We have all heard the adage that you only get one chance to make a first impression. It might be a cliché, but it’s also true. Being well prepared for a job interview takes more of an effort than searching for a list of common interview questions on Google. You have to make a great first impression appearance-wise, have a great knowledge of the company where you are interviewing, their  product, and how to communicate why you’re the perfect fit for the job. So to help you get prepared, we compiled a list of our all-time best pre-interview tips.

  1. Ensure your consultant has provided you with a detailed understanding of the position description, the team environment and the company.
  2. Do your own additional research on the company by reading annual reports and researching on the internet. Demonstrating your understanding of the company’s products and services, size, locations, financial situation and growth potential, gives you a leg-up on your competition.
  3. Plan the perfect outfit. For companies that have a business or business casual dress code, keep your look basic and conservative for the first interview and pay attention to all aspects of your dress and grooming.
  4. Make sure you know exactly where you’re going and always be on time.
  5. Know the exact place and time of the interview. Make sure you know the interviewer’s name and of course the correct pronunciation of their title.
  6. Know your CV and review your experience and its relevance to the position. Pinpoint the specific examples in your background that are directly relevant to the position description and demonstrate your ability to do the job.
  7. Review your CV and the details of present and past employers and your work history for each. You will be expected to know a lot about a company for which you have previously worked.
  8. Think about how you will define your most notable accomplishments with your previous employment.
  9. Know how to communicate why this job opportunity appeals to you, why you should be considered for this role and what sets you apart from other candidates.
  10. The interviewer will try to conclude if you have the qualifications necessary to do the job. But you must decide whether the company is a match for the opportunity, growth and development that fits your career path. So think about the questions you need to ask during the interview.
