What makes a great engineer?

Engineers are responsible for some of the world’s greatest inventions. They are the people that keep things going. That make companies work. That do the work behind the scenes so that keep profits coming in. Basically, the world depends and can’t do without the technology that engineers have developed.

Everything from space shuttles to designing electrical equipment for the construction industry; it requires the work of an engineer. Now becoming an engineer has never been easy and every engineering discipline comes with great skills and is followed by even greater responsibilities. But what is the difference between an engineer and a great engineer? Glad you asked! Great engineers have certain skills and personality traits in common:

They are logical thinkers. Having the talent and clarity to be able to think logically is what sets them apart. A great engineer is able to make sense of complex systems and understand how things work and how may problems arise.

They are adaptive thinkers. Your technical skills are what makes you an engineer. But it is equally important to be able to look at things from the perspective of those who don’t have your skill set. Being able to turn adjust your process-oriented mindset and interpret the world through the eyes of the end-user is something that important to advance your career.

They have excellent problem solving skills. Many engineers are only called upon to address problems. Being able to identify where the problem is originating from and to rapidly develop a solution for the problem is a skill that will put you in high demand.

They effectively manage risks. Project plans are not always perfect and problems may arise anytime and something could go wrong. This involves the steps that you have foreseen and those you didn’t anticipate. A great engineer can effectively manage these risks and prevent it from happening again.

They have strong analytical capabilities. Being naturally inquisitive and having excellent analytical skills, feeds their drive to continually examine things and think of ways to make improvements.

They poses a great attention to detail. A great engineer pays meticulous attention to detail. The slightest error can cause an entire structure to fail, so every detail must be reviewed thoroughly during the course of completing a project.

They are good communicators. Engineers are great at explaining their ideas and can show a great deal of contagious enthusiasm. What many aren’t so great at, though, is communicating in a manner that is clear to those outside the field. A great engineer can translate complex technical lingo into plain English and also communicate verbally with clients and other engineers working together on a project.

They are team players. No one can finish a project by themselves alone. You need team members to work on it in order to make it a success. A great engineer understands that they are part of a larger team working together to make one project come together successfully, and therefore, must work well as part of that team.

They invest in continued education. Because changes in technology happen rapidly, the most successful engineers keep up to date of new developments, research and ideas. Which of course is an investment in themselves.
